Virginia for Liberty – Gone for a Soldier

Every man considered himself a soldier – had his horse and his rifle, which he knew well how to use. Always ready to join at short notice.

William Martin

Draper Manuscripts

Widely considered a formidable force by the British military, the Virginia rifleman played a pivotal role in securing American independence. Armed with their longrifles, self-reliance, and unwavering courage, these backwoodsmen became legendary at key battles like Brandywine, Kings Mountain, and Yorktown. Throughout the Revolutionary War, King George and his allies felt the full force of their steady aim as their desire for liberty helped defeat tyrannical rule.

The Friends of Wilderness Road State Park are excited to announce the “Virginia for Liberty – Gone for a Soldier” fundraising project. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own handmade accouterments just like those used by Virginia’s revolutionary heroes. Reproduced by some of the nation’s most talented artists, the project pieces are influenced by original 18th-century items used in Virginia during America’s fight for independence. Be a part of this unique celebration of our nation’s founding as we perpetuate 250 years of history through art.
